New Broadway Shows
The new musical comedy, All
Shook Up, inspired by and featuring twenty-four Elvis
Presley songs, tells the fictional story of a
guitar-playing roustabout who brings romance, rebellion
and rock 'n' roll into the life of a small-town girl. The
musical opens in previews at the Palace Theatre, 1564
Broadway at 47th Street on February 20 with an official
opening date of March 24. The play is scheduled for an
open-ended run.
The new musical, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang opens in
previews at the Hilton Theatre, 213 West 42nd Street
between Seventh and Eighth Avenue on March 29 with an
official opening date of April 28, 2005. Based on the 1968
movie musical, this family-friendly spectacular follows
the life of madcap inventor, Caractacus Potts, a widower
who delights in eccentric gadgets. He sets about restoring
an old car from a scrap heap with the help of his two
children, and a lady friend named Truly Scrumptious.
However, when the car develops magical properties it comes
under the evil eye of Baron Bomburst. This high-flying
production stars Philip Bosco, Erin Dilly, Raul Esparza,
Marc Kudisch and Jan Maxwell and is scheduled for an
open-ended run.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, the new musical opens in
previews at the Imperial Theatre, 249 West 45th Street
between Broadway and Eight Avenue with an official opening
date of March 3. Based on the film of the same name two
con men with conflicting work habits compete to control
the action in the French Riviera. The story takes a
hilarious turn when they make a bet to see who will be the
first to swindle a young woman out of $50,000. The musical
stars John Lithgow, Norbert Leo Butz, Joanna Gleason,
Gregory Jbara, Sara Gettelfinger, Sheri Rene Scott and
Timothy J. Alex and is scheduled for an open-ended run.
David Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama about morality
in American business, Glengarry Glen Ross opens in
previews at the Royale Theatre, 242 West 45th Street
between Broadway and Eight Avenue on April 8 with an
official opening date of May 1. The play stars Alan Alda,
Gordon Clapp, Jordan Lage, Liev Schreiber, Jeffrey Tambor,
Frederick Weller and Tom Wopat and is scheduled to close
on August 28, 2005.
The one-man show, Jackie Mason: Freshly Squeezed
opens in previews at the Helen Hayes Theatre, 240 West
44th Street between Broadway and Eighth Avenue on March 8
with an official opening date of March 28. Comedian Jackie
Mason brings his seventh one-person show to Broadway,
commenting on, among other topics, same-sex marriage,
stock market fraud, celebrity trials and, of course,
politics, politics and more politics. The show is
scheduled for an open-ended run.
The new musical The Light in the Piazza opens in
previews at The Vivian Beaumont Theater, Lincoln Center,
150 West 65th Street on March 17 with an official opening
date of April 18. The composer-lyricist Adam Guettel teams
with writer-director Craig Lucas for this story of an
American girl with a secret who falls deeply in love with
an Italian man while visiting Florence with her
disapproving mother. The play is scheduled to close on
June 12, 2005.
The Pillowman, a new play by Martin Mcdonagh, opens
in previews at the Booth Theatre, 222 West 45th Street on
March 21 with an official opening date of April 10. Horror
and humor battle it out in a play about the interrogation
of a storyteller/writer in a totalitarian state whose
short stories bear a striking resemblance to child murders
in his town. The play starring Billy Crudup, Jeff Goldblum,
Zeljko Ivanek and Michael Stuhlbarg is scheduled for an
open-ended run.
Steel Magnolias opens in previews at the Lyceum
Theatre, 149 West 45th Street between Sixth and Seventh
Avenues on March 15 with an official opening date of April
4. This play follows the lives of six women in a Louisiana
beauty salon as they share laughter, tears and strength
while navigating life's choppy waters. The play stars
Delta Burke, Christine Ebersole, Rebecca Gayheart, Marsha
Mason, Lily Rabe and Frances Sternhagen and is scheduled
for an open-ended run.
The musical revival of Sweet Charity opens in
previews at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, 302 West 45th
Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues on April 4 with an
official opening date of April 21. Based on the Fellini
film Nights of Cabiria, the musical tells the story of
Charity Hope Valentine, a taxi dancer with a heart of gold
but a will of tin foil. Though she dreams of meeting the
right man and settling down, she keeps lavishing her
affections on losers. Her luck starts to change when she
meets a suave Italian movie star, but things really start
to look rosy when she runs into a nebbishy but sweet guy
in a night-school elevator. Could this finally be her
Prince Charming? The musical stars Christina Applegate,
Denis O'Hare, Ernie Sabella and Rhett George and is
scheduled for an open-ended run.
